Ramona met Nat Cohen on a beach on Mallorca. But this was no holiday. It was 1936, they were both in the Republican militia and were retreating back to their ships when they were strafed by Italian planes. A Hollywood film scene comes to mind, Nat shielding Ramona while he fires at the planes swooping low over the beach with his pistol, around them hundreds of other militia moving in confusion towards the waiting ships.
